Intel’s Dimming Future

Word on the street that Intel is going to spin off its fab business. I can confirm this from what I’ve heard recently plus a little speculation. The time frame for the spin-off should be around 2022-2023.

I have 2 conclusions:

1. Intel will lose the leading position in semi-conductor manufacturing.
For the foreseeable future TSMC will have the upper hand.
2. Intel will also lose the leading position in x86 logic chip from the performance perspective. Without advanced fabricating process, there is no way a semi-conductor product could have top-of-the-line performance. To make matter worse. The new NUMA design from AMD has been proven highly successful. The CCX and Infinity Fabric are very efficient. Intel has realized their disadvantage. Their ring-bus design is not very scalable and their new mesh design is not very efficient. Intel will release a new design around 2021, which should be similar to AMD’s design in a number of ways. When AMD starts to ship out their new products based on TSMC 7nm process.
Intel will have a really bad time.
